For the past few years, I have brought out a variety of “winter” objects to share during the “Explore Collections” program. This year, the program timing couldn’t be better. We’ve had quite a snowy winter!
In cold weather climates, it is fascinating to me how people have adapted to freezing temperatures and snowy conditions. Before we had abundant plastic, glass and synthetic fabrics, people used the materials that were local to them, in many cases animal hides, furs and sinews. Using these familiar resources, they were able to create utilitarian and beautifully crafted objects. Take a peek at some of what we have in the collection.
What is your favorite winter activity? (Mine is drinking hot cocoa and knitting hats!)
